Balsam Poplar Hydrosol is one of our rarest seasonal distillations: a small-batch botanical mist made from wild-foraged spring buds of western balsam poplar, also known as black cottonwood.
These sticky, resinous buds appear for only a brief window each year, carrying the scent of early spring along riverbanks and wet woodland edges: sweet, honeyed, floral, green, balsamic, and resinous. In herbal traditions, cottonwood buds are often known as Balm of Gilead and are more commonly infused into oils and balms. A true hydrosol distilled from the buds is far less common.
Here, the plant comes through in a lighter, mistable, water-based form: soft, aromatic, and evocative of spring and riparian zones.
Use as a facial mist after cleansing, a refreshing body mist, pillow spray, room mist, or gentle aromatic reset throughout the day. It is especially beautiful when you want something softer than perfume but more alive than plain water.
Like all Deschampsia hydrosols, this is a true plant distillate: botanical water gathered through steam distillation, not a synthetic fragrance water or essential oil diluted into water.
Available only in limited seasonal batches.
